Step into the world of Japanese craftsmanship with an authentic kintsugi workshop in Kyoto. Shikata Urushi, a studio with a history dating to 1867, invites you to experience an authentic kintsugi workshop using genuine lacquer.
In this two-hour workshop, all materials are provided so you can arrive empty-handed and ready to create. Under the guidance of skilled instructors, you’ll repair two pieces of Japanese tableware using genuine lacquer and glittering powder. Step by step, learn the techniques that transform flaws into stunning works of art.
The workshop takes place in a quiet, traditional Kyoto setting, tucked away in a peaceful alley. Relax in this serene ambiance and enjoy the meditative art of kintsugi. During the session, take a tea break with refreshments served in traditional lacquerware. As you relax, learn about the unique characteristics of lacquerware and how it compares to ceramics and glass.

Important Information
- Genuine urushi (natural lacquer) is used in the workshop. Although gloves will be provided, there is a risk of allergic reactions if urushi comes into contact with your skin.
- Your repaired items can be used 2–3 weeks after the workshop.
- Please avoid putting repaired items in the microwave, dishwasher, or freezer, and do not leave them soaking in water for long periods.

Workshop Content
1. Learning about Urushi
First, you will learn about the natural Japanese lacquer "urushi," and its important role in kintsugi. While the golden luster of a piece mended with kintsugi is stunning, every step of kintsugi relies on urushi. The true star of kintsugi isn’t the gold — it’s the lacquer. We’ll also share insights about urushi harvesting and refining, offering you a deeper appreciation of this traditional craft.
2. Choosing Your Pieces
Select two pieces to repair: one broken vessel, and one with cracks. Choose from a variety of items such as guinomi (sake cups) small condiment dishes, and the like. With so many shapes, sizes, and colors available, you might have trouble deciding! The joy of finding the perfect piece is part of the experience.
3. Adhesive Application
Next, the work begins. This is a crucial step where you’ll carefully attach the broken parts without any misalignment. Adjust the pieces little by little to achieve a perfect fit. Many participants say, "This moment is the most satisfying!" Concentrate and enjoy the feeling of the pieces coming together.
Note that to ensure a smoother process, we use a special resin in some steps, but the final finishing is done with traditional urushi, preserving the essence of the craft.
4. Cleaning the Adhesive Surfaces
This step is essential for a clean and beautiful finish! Use a specialist file, or a design knife, to carefully clean and smooth the adhesive areas. As you remove excess adhesive and see the surface transform, it’s a surprisingly satisfying process — you may well find yourself completely absorbed in the task.
5. Relaxing Tea Break
Take a break and enjoy refreshments served in beautiful urushi-coated tableware. Feel the unique texture and warmth of the urushi as you sip your tea. During this time, we’ll introduce you to the characteristics of urushi and how it differs from ceramics and glassware.
6. Applying the Urushi
Here comes the exciting step! Carefully apply urushi to the prepared surfaces using a brush. As you glide the brush and create thin, clean lines, you’ll feel like you’re creating a piece of art. Take your time to focus and enjoy the process — it’s a thrilling moment, but we mustn't go overboard at the critical moment!
7. Powder Application
This is the most dazzling step of the kintsugi process. Choose to apply gold (brass powder) or silver (tin powder) accents, and sprinkle your powder over the urushi-coated area. Customize your vessel while considering the shape and colors of the item. The moment the powder is applied, the piece transforms — it's a magical and moving moment!
8. Packing and Final Touches
Once completed, the pieces are carefully packed for you to take home. After a waiting period of 2 to 3 weeks, your repaired pieces will be ready to use. The anticipation of using your self-repaired creation will make the wait worthwhile!
