Description

Chuzenji is a temple built by Shodo Shonin in 784, a World Heritage Site of Nikkozan Rinnoji. It is said that Shodo Shonin saw Senju Kannon on Lake Chuzenji and carved it on a Katsura tree in the Gohonzon "Eleven-faced Senju Kanzeon Bosatsu" (National Important Cultural Property). This Kannon is still rooted in the ground, and welcomes visitors with a gentle expression. In addition, many pilgrims will also worship at the 18th temple of Bando Sanjusankannon Sacred Ground. Gohonzon "Tachiki-Kannon" is the principal image of Chuzen-ji Temple, Nikko-san. The eleven-faced thousand-armed Kannon Bodhisattva (National Important Cultural Property). In Buddhism, there is a "guardian deity" for the year of birth, who protects the child for the rest of his/her life. The blessings of Senju Kannon are said to be "fulfillment of various wishes," and she is the Buddha who fulfills various wishes. Therefore, please stand in front of Kannon and tell her what you wish for. Since they are wishes, they can be about anything. If you are ill, please pray for a speedy recovery. If you are taking an entrance examination, please pray that you will pass the exam. Please come and tell Kannon-sama what you are wishing for at that moment. The temple is a prayer hall where the Five Great Myoo's (Fudo Myoo, Kusansei Myoo, Gundari Myoo, Daimeitoku Myoo, and Kongoyasha Myoo) are enshrined. On the ceiling, a large cloud dragon painted by painter Kenzan Nanpu, a member of the Japan Art Academy, boasts a majestic appearance. The view of Lake Chuzenji from Godaido is so spectacular that it will shake the heart of anyone who sees it.
