On this day trip from Taipei City, you'll get to visit Yehliu Geopark, Jiufen, and Shifen in Pingxi District, all located along Taiwan's scenic northern coast. One of northern Taiwan's premier tourist destinations, Yehliu Geopark is home to a number of unique geological formations, including the iconic Queen's Head. Its other fascinating hoodoo stones include Sea Candles, Fairy Shoe, Ginger Rocks, Elephant Rock, Ice Cream Rock, Kissing Rock, Princess' Head, and more, all carved by nature over millions of years. Jiufen flourished in the 1940s thanks to the gold mining industry. While the golden age has long passed, this small town still has plenty of stories to tell. Award-winning director Hou Hsiao-hsien first helped to bring Jiufen to the public's attention with his film "City of Sadness” (1989), while Japanese animation director Hayao Miyazaki is also said to have been inspired by the mountain town for the Studio Ghibli film, "Spirited Away" (2001). Have a seat in one of Jiufen's unique tea shops and enjoy picturesque views of the town as you sip on tea. Or, stroll along the street, where you can shop for local snacks and souvenirs. If you have a sweet tooth, don’t miss the opportunity to try taro balls, a classic local dessert! Shifen is well known for the Shifen Waterfall, or also known as “Taiwan’s Niagara Falls,” a 20-meter-tall waterfall with tumbling waters that create a beautiful rainbow as they splash into the lake. It's widely regarded as the most scenic waterfall in all of Taiwan. The train station located down the river from the waterfall area, originally built for transporting coal, was built right alongside the Shifen Old Street, and today stands as a reminder of Taiwan's history and culture. Not far away, the Pingxi Sky Lantern area is where you can write a message, light your lantern, and watch it fly to the sky. After the tour you may choose to disembark at Xinyi Shopping District (Taipei 101) or MRT Zhongxiao Xinsheng Station.
