Walk among prehistoric giants at one of the world’s three largest dinosaur museums, the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum! With a sprawling 15,000 square meters of floor space, the museum is fittingly located in Katsuyama City in Fukui Prefecture, which has unearthed more dinosaur fossils than the rest of Japan since excavations began in 1989. As there have been fossils of new dinosaur species discovered in Fukui, you’ll get to see fossils of dinosaurs named after the prefecture at this museum. They include the herbivorous Fukuisaurus, as well as the carnivorous Fukuiraptor. Also on display is an extensive 42-piece collection of whole dinosaur skeletons and dioramas, of which seven are actual fossils. Exhibits are all accompanied by excellent explanations in English, and you can rent multilingual audio guides, too. The Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum draws around 700,000 curious visitors every year, and is also an active international dinosaur research center, with Japanese and foreign paleontologists in residence. From behind a glass window, you’ll be able to watch them clean fossils and conduct research. Or, get a taste of being a paleontologist yourself at the museum, where you can also try holding and digging for fossils in a hands-on experience! Besides an open-dated ticket to the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum, this bundle also includes an Echizen Railway one-day ticket and one-day community bus ticket, for hassle-free travel to the museum.
