Overview

After the war, as the world of Japanese painting wavered between tradition and innovation, young artists in Kyoto began to explore avant-garde forms of expression. This exhibition focuses on three art groups formed from the 1940s onward—Sōzō Art, the Pan-Real Art Association, and the Kera Art Association—introducing the challenges and trajectories of artists who questioned the very framework of Nihonga. By highlighting the critical spirit and creativity that flourished within the Kyoto art scene, the exhibition traces an alternative lineage of Japanese painting that continues into the present, collectively referred to here as “Nihonga Avant-Garde.”
