Overview

Nikko-san Chuzenji (Tachibuki Kannon) is a Tendai Buddhist temple located on the shores of Lake Chuzenji in Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture, and serves as a branch of Rinno-ji Temple. It traces its origins back to the year 784, when the monk Shodo carved an image of the Eleven-faced Thousand-armed Kannon into a standing katsura tree. The main deity, still preserved with its roots, is enshrined there today. As the 18th temple of the Bando 33 Kannon Pilgrimage, it has long been a revered site of worship. Within the precincts, visitors can also see the Four Heavenly Kings statues donated by Minamoto no Yoritomo, as well as a ceiling painting of the Great Cloud Dragon, all while enjoying breathtaking views of the lake and Mount Nantai. Surrounded by history and nature, it is a place where you can find peace of mind and a moment of tranquility.
