About the Exhibits A team of up-and-coming creators will direct words, music, and space to unravel the various stories behind the treasures under the themes of “love,” “beauty,” and “weaving." This exhibition is also unique in that the details and textures of the treasures can be felt realistically through the staged display of high-definition 3D digital data obtained from 360-degree scans of the actual treasures. The exhibition will also offer a new viewing experience that immerses visitors in the world of Shōsōin by combining the “reproductions” that the Shōsōin Office has been researching and producing with the latest digitally controlled video, music, and lighting. In addition, new works inspired by Shosoin by contemporary artists such as fashion designer Tomoe Shinohara will also be introduced.
Visitors can take photos and post them on social networking sites, including (but not only) at designated photo spots. Visitors are invited to walk through the “Story of Shosoin” and experience the miracle of 1,300 years of history while feeling and enjoying themselves. Prologue The episodes between Emperor Shomu and Empress Komyo behind the birth of the treasures are introduced through video and graphics. Visitors are invited to step into “The Story of Shosoin". Area 1 The “Reproductions” will be exhibited in a new way, combining video, music, and lighting. On a large screen, the beauty of the treasures down to the smallest detail will be fully introduced through images utilizing 3D digital data. Area 2 The “Story of Shosoin” will be developed under the themes of “love,” “beauty,” and “weaving. The exhibition will delve deeper into the story through graphics, videos, and reproductions:
- In the “Love” corner, the personalities of Emperor Shomu and Empress Komyo are imagined through their writings, and the episode of the construction of the Great Buddha at Todaiji Temple for the happiness of the people is introduced through materials and treasures related to the Great Buddha Opening Ceremony.
- The “Beauty” corner focuses on the beauty of treasures that continue to fascinate us even after 1,300 years. The beauty of treasures is unraveled through the stories of the Tang Dynasty envoys who risked their lives to bring objects from around the world to Japan via the Silk Road, and the artisans who created new beauty by fusing foreign culture with the Japanese aesthetic sense and techniques.
- The treasures of Shosoin were not left by chance, but have been preserved and handed down through the strong will of the people to preserve them. The “Spinning” section explores the thoughts and feelings of the guardians who have passed them down through the ages. Area 3 Inspired by the beauty and sounds of Shosoin and its treasures, contemporary artists have created new clothing, crafts, musical compositions, and photographic works.
