Description
Due to its huge impact on Japanese cultural heritage, it was designated as a Meiji Industrial Revolution World Heritage Site. One of Nagasaki's more than 500 uninhabited islands, it was a symbol of Japan's rapid industrialization in the 20th century. Wandering its open grounds, abandoned buildings retain their original appearance. You'll also learn that the site was originally known as an undersea coal mine that operated in the 1890s. It has also been a filming location for many popular American production companies such as Netflix, History Network and Science Channel. Hashima is also called Battleship Island because its shape resembles a warship.
