Description

Ever wondered about the captivating Makonde culture? At the Makonde Art Museum in Ise, Mie Prefecture, you explore the roots of the Makonde people from the vast 5,000-square-kilometer Makonde Plateau that spans Tanzania and Mozambique in East Africa. Home to the Bandu tribe, this plateau, standing 500 to 800 meters above sea level, serves as the cradle of an ancient culture steeped in the art of carving. Today's Makonde carvings predominantly feature the resilient African ebony of East Africa. Carving this exceptionally tough wood requires skill and patience, but the results are stunning representations of natural forms found in branches and roots, adding a rich layer to the artwork. In recent times, the Makonde sculpture community has relocated its vibrant production hub to the outskirts of Dar es Salaam, a bustling economic center. This strategic move has attracted a cadre of talented artists, propelling Makonde art onto the international stage — and to finding an unexpected home in Japan’s Ise City, in Mie Prefecture.
