Description

Experience the cultural richness of the Ainu people with an admission ticket to Akan Yukar "Lost Kamuy." This digitally enhanced stage performance tells a traditional tale of Hokkaido’s native people at the Lake Akan Ainu Theater, in the Akan Ainu Kotan Village, near Lake Akan in East Hokkaido. Mari Natsuki (renowned Japanese actress, singer, and theater director) helped craft this new production and narrated it as well. With new music and contemporary choreography as well as refined ancient ceremonial dances, “Lost Kamuy” will convey to you the messages of the Ainu in unforgettable fashion. **The Story** The Ainu hold a deep belief in the presence of souls within all things: animals, plants, and natural phenomena. Living in harmony with these souls, known as kamuy, the Ainu consider them as family. At the heart of the narrative lies the extraordinary kamuy — the Ezo wolf, revered by the Ainu as the "Horkew Kamuy" or hunting god. However, the Ezo wolf faced calamity when heavy snow led to a decline in the deer population. With no prey, the wolves turned to the livestock of settlers from Japan’s mainland. Through ancient ceremonial dance and incredible digital effects, the Lake Akan Ainu Theater tells the story of this clash between Hokkaido’s indigenous souls and the island’s new residents with their very different outlook. Learn how the story played out over 6 years of Hokkaido’s history, and ponder the lessons of the fearsome messages believed to be left by the kamuy through the dreams of the locals… In this profound performance, every element, including the stories of these lost kamuy, plays a significant role. Join us to witness a cultural odyssey that will leave you with a deep appreciation for Ainu traditions and a poignant reflection on the interconnectedness of all things.
