Key Information
Description
The charm of the Takayama Matsuri lies in its solemn elegance, gorgeousness, and moving festival floats. It is said that the festival floats were built in the middle of the Edo period (1603–1868). Since the Meiji era (1868–1912), only alterations and repairs have been made. How can we preserve the traditional skills for future generations? Kinta Nakata, who was born in Hida and loves Hida very much, thought, "It is important to protect what was made in the past, but we can only pass it on to future generations by making use of this "technique" in the modern age. When the era changed from Showa to Heisei, this grand project became a reality. With the cooperation of local craftsmen, the "Heisei Yatai" was newly built for the first time in 150 years since the end of the Edo period, and was a culmination of the artisanal skills of the past. The yatai is in the 8-meter class and can be operated. Each is decorated with unique carvings, metal fittings, side curtains, and a gazebo. Please take a look at the "Heisei era's festival float" which is a sight to behold. In the museum, visitors can also enjoy the computer-controlled marionettes. Also on display are large drums made from a giant tree 3 meters in diameter and 50 meters high. At the separate Insect Collection of the World, 100,000 insect specimens of 30,000 species collected in Japan, Southeast Asia, South America, North America, Africa, and other parts of the world are exhibited. They may look different in shape and form, or be born in different places, but they are all important friends of the earth. Visitors can enjoy the world of insects on 30 monitors of various sizes, including a diorama of the insect world of a tropical rainforest and a video of the world's largest butterfly, the Tribane Swallowtail.
