Overview

Located in Sakata City, Yamagata Prefecture, the Homma Museum of Art holds a wide range of exhibitions, from antiques to contemporary art and historical materials. With this ticket, you can also enter the Homma Villa Garden (Kakubu-en), a nationally designated Place of Scenic Beauty, and the villa Seienkaku. In addition to the permanent exhibition, special exhibitions are held　occasionally, and visitors can also enjoy these.

The Homma Museum of Art was founded in 1947 by the Homma family, who were wealthy merchants in the Edo period and were known as Japan's biggest landowners after the Meiji period. The Homma family's policy has been to contribute to the local community since their ancestors opened their garden as an art museum. The operation of the museum at that time was not carried out solely by the founders, the Homma family, but also was a collaborative effort with those who cooperated with the opening of the museum, and entrusted their dreams to the post-war society. While it's conveying the spirit of contributing to the local community, you can also enjoy exhibitions of antiques and contemporary art, the beauty of the four seasons woven by the garden "Kakubu-en," the beauty of the Kyoto-style wooden architecture of the villa "Seienkaku," of Sakata City, which prospered due to the Kitamae-bune shipping route, and how the museum fuses the charms of art, nature, and history. • Nationally Designated Place of Scenic Beauty, Homma Villa Garden (Kakubu-en) The garden was built in 1813 by the fourth generation Homma Mitsudo, with a path looping around its pond and the scenery of Mt. Chokai as a natural backdrop. The garden was named "Tsurumai-en" (Crane Dance Garden) by the feudal lord Sakai because of the cranes that landed on the island in the middle of the pond. The garden was created as a measure against unemployment for people working at the port during the winter. The garden is rich in taste with beautiful white azaleas in early summer and autumn leaves in fall, and is decorated with red stones from Sado and blue stones from Iyo brought on the Kitamae-bune shipping route • Seienkaku The villa was built as a place for the feudal lord, Marquis Sakai, to rest when he toured the territory. It is a comfortable building with refined Kyoto-style construction and modern furnishings reminiscent of Taisho-period romanticism. •Tea room inside Seienkaku There is a tea room in Seienkaku, which is also reminiscent of Taisho romanticism. From there, you can overlook the garden "Tsurumai-en," and the scenery will make you forget the time. They also offer original coffee, matcha, and sweets sets.
