Description
In this unique cultural activity, guests can have a behind-the scenes sumo experience hosted by actual retired rikishi — professional sumo wrestlers. You’ll see a demonstration of sumo put on by two such skilled rikishi, and get to ask any questions you may have — very different from the somber setting when watching an official training session. As well as the demo, enjoy an explanation of the intense training and the essential techniques of sumo wrestling. There’s a lot more skill to it than some people think! Bold guests can even get hands-on, and challenge one of the wrestlers to a bout themselves! Lastly, you'll have lunch at a tonkatsu restaurant. Feel free to ask more questions of your hosts while you eat. Originating in the 7th century as a ritual dedicated to the gods, sumo wrestling is an ancient part of Japanese tradition, and the official national sport. Normally shrouded in ritual, with a language barrier between travelers and the depths of the culture, through this activity the world of sumo is open to all!
