Description

Try a truly unique craft in Towada Hachimantai, at the world’s only geothermal dyeing facility! Here you can make a tie-dyed handkerchief and a mini-scarf (kerchief), using methods and colors that represent Hachimantai’s nature and seasons. Using traditional techniques and natural dyes, you can create your own work of art and precious souvenir. The unique products of this studio are rooted in Japanese tradition, while using cutting edge techniques you cannot try anywhere else. Furthermore, your creation will be a result of the volcanic beauty and the powerful nature which is the very foundation of Japan. What could better represent Towada Hachimantai National Park? You'll dye your very own scarf using the Hachimantai geothermal dyeing method, which employs geothermal vapor to fix the dyes and adds beautiful gradations to your pattern. First, you'll fold, squeeze, and bind the cloth with threads, a method called 'shiborizome.' Then, you'll dip your tightly bound item in one dye after another, leading to the unique colorful gradations that geothermal dyeing can create. The third, main stage is steaming. You'll put your piece in an oven that uses the same extremely pure steam as the Matsukawa Geothermal Power Plant. After 20 minutes, the dye will be fixed and the balance of hydrogen sulfide in the steam will have smoothed out each transition between the different colors. While the stem works its magic, you're free to rest in the cafe or browse the Alpen Rose store, where beautiful geothermal-dyed products are on display and available to buy. When the dyeing is done, you'll watch the staff untie your creation with care, and see it unfurl like an iridescent butterfly coming out of its cocoon. The final steps are washing, ironing, and packing your item. Smaller groups should be able to do this as well in the allotted time. For larger groups (about 10 or more people) please consult us about your schedule. If there is no time on the day, it is possible to have your items finished by the staff and delivered to you afterward.
