Key Information
Description
Experience the Edo Period today with a visit to Magome-juku. For example, here you will find an old wooden fire hydrant and learn how the local fire brigade fought fires. Escape the hustle and bustle of Japan's large modern metropolises, and experience history and culture through local people, places, and objects. Once a strategically important point of defense in the Edo Period, Kashimo lies at the intersection of the Hida, Mino, and Tono regions of Gifu. Today most of Kashimo is forested, and large portions of this area have been designated for the reconstruction and repair of national treasures. Kashimo is also home to Kashimo Meijiza Theater, a wooden building constructed in 1894, and one of the few theaters with a revolving stage and a runway still in use today. Kashimo Meijiza Theater was designated as an important cultural asset of Gifu Prefecture in 1972.
