Description
Pulled by a human runner, the ‘jinrikisha,’ or rickshaw, was widespread in Japan in the Meiji era (1868–1912). Though it later lost popularity when automobiles and trains came along, it enjoyed a revival in the ’70s as a mode of transport for sightseeing.
Today, riding a jinrikisha is a popular cultural experience for tourists, and rickshaw pullers do double duty as tour guides while ferrying passengers around attractions.
On this 30-minute online tour of Takayama City, you can get a taste of this same cultural experience at home. Together with your English-speaking guide and rickshaw puller, you’ll explore the city from the vantage point of the back of a jinrikisha!
Located in the mountainous Gifu Prefecture, Takayama City is known for its historic and picturesque Sanmachi Suji district. The beautifully preserved streets of the district are lined with wooden shophouses that merchants owned in the Edo-period, now housing restaurants, sake breweries, and cafes.
