Description

Mt. Takao is a popular destination that attracts 3 million people each year. Just an hour from the bustling center of Tokyo, Mt. Takao is perfect for day-trippers wanting an easy hike with scenic views, without leaving the metropolis. On a clear day you might even see Mt. Fuji!

Meet the guide at your Tokyo hotel, then head to Takaosanguchi Station together by train. You’ll start on the main trail to Mt. Takao’s peak. It’s a fairly easy climb, the well-paved Trail 1 being perfect for beginners — and thriving with beautiful nature!

You’ll learn from your guide about the lore of Mt. Takao, held sacred since ancient times, and get a glimpse into Japanese culture. The mountain is said to be inhabited by long-nosed goblins called ‘tengu,’ and you’ll see many depictions of them at your first stop, Yakuo-in. Near Mt. Takao’s summit, this Shingon Buddhist temple established in 744 has many tengu statues to see.

After the temple you’ll have time to shop for lucky charms, snacks, and souvenirs. You’ll then continue up to the summit. There you’ll enjoy the sky-high view, take some great photos, and rest a while.

Then, hike back down via Trail 6, with breaks along the way. Back at the mountain’s base is your chance for lunch: you can dine at a soba noodle shop, or you can simply buy food at a convenience store. Of course, the choice is yours, so discuss with your guide in case you prefer a third option, or you can even skip the lunch break and press on straight on the endpoint.

Not only a sacred site, but also a beautiful spot that offers natural scenery, Mt. Takao is the best place for a refreshing hike near the city!
