Key Information
Description
Enjoy an immersive experience of Japanese art and culture through studying shodo – the art of Japanese calligraphy using ink, brush, and paper! Through an hour and a half long lesson with native Japanese teacher Hoyu, you will learn the basics of Japanese calligraphy and will even be able to create your own works to take home as a souvenir, or give as a gift. Let this be a way for you to have an unforgettable time in Japan! Beginning with the basics of brush technique and posture, teacher Hoyu will guide you gradually until you are able to compose works on your own comfortably. In doing a variety of exercises to hone your skills, you can learn to create beautiful works of calligraphy. You can also choose what you want to write, and the instructor will teach you how to compose it. This is a rare opportunity to create your own souvenir of Japan, while enjoying the serenity that comes from dedicating yourself to the delicate nature of this art. Enjoy a glimpse of the Japanese beauty, and bring home the art work as something to remember from your trip. Enjoy Japan not as a spectator, but as an active participant! Nearby the venue is the Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum, located in the beautiful Koganei Park. There you can have a unique opportunity to go through Tokyo's history by entering replicas of historical buildings (not included in the activity price). So why not learn traditional calligraphy in the morning with me, and then take a trip back in time in the afternoon? *We have bags that you can write your calligraphy on for an extra charge. Please let me know in advance if you would like to receive this service. We are able to print the image of your calligraphy onto bags as well but please note that shipping and handling charges and 8 days time will be required to prepare and deliver to you. **Other non-teaching calligraphy requests, as well as sudden requests (within 2 days) will require an additional fee.
How it works
On the reservation day, we will meet prior to the lesson at the Central Gate of Musashi-Koganei Station on JR Chuo Line, Tokyo. From there, we will lead you on foot to the classroom (7-10 min). The calligraphy lesson will last 1.5 hours, during which the instructor will provide you with calligraphy tools and teach you the basics of how to use them. After that, you will choose what you want to write, and the instructor will guide you in English as well as provide corrections until you are satisfied with your work. You may keep your work for display at your home or as a gift, etc. (frames are available for a separate 1000 yen price). If you wish, you may take pictures wearing yukata, kimono (Taisho Roman hakama), jinbaori, or samurai armor (including an imitation sword). After calligraphy, you can enjoy matcha and sweets, so please feel free to contact us if you are interested in any of these additional options. *Please note that time taken to pick up visitors from Musashi-Koganei station may be included within the overall 1.5 hours of the lesson. Please let us know if you require guidance back to the station after the lesson is over.
