Yasujiro Ozu first gained international recognition in 1958 when his film, "Tokyo Story," clinched the Sutherland Prize at the London International Film Festival. That same year, he was honored with the Medal with Purple Ribbon. In, 1959, Ozu won the Artistic Academy Prize becoming the first filmmaker to be a member of the Artistic Academy. In 2012, Ozu's "Tokyo Story" was crowned the greatest film of all time in a Sight & Sound Magazine poll, participated by 358 directors from around the world. The magazine, published by the British Film Institute (BFI), also ranked him fourth in the '100 greatest films of all time' list in 2022. His works have been screened at numerous prestigious international film festivals, including Cannes and Venice, cementing his reputation as a globally renowned film director. Upon visiting 'Kumohoso,' the villa of his scriptwriting partner, Noda Kogo, Ozu found himself utterly enchanted by the natural beauty, local culture, and sake of Tateshina. Ozu relocated his workspace from 'Chigasaki-kan' in Chigasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture, to 'Mugei-so' in Tateshina City, Nagano Prefecture. It was here in Tateshina that he finished the scripts for six of his projects, starting with "Tokyo Twilight." Ozu thoroughly enjoyed his life in Tateshina, he had a deep affection for sake, and was a generous host to all who visited. Ozu actively interacted with the local community, bestowing wedding gifts and even partaking in local events such as the elementary school sports days. Tateshina served not only as the creative cradle for many of Ozu's acclaimed works, but also held a special place in his heart.
