Straddled between Niigata and Nagano Prefectures, Myoko-Togakushi Renzan is a recent National Park that opened its doors in 2015. The park is filled with an abundant set of mountains that boast various natural features, from volcanic mountain ranges to calderas. It is home to two mountains, Mt. Myoko and Mt. Takatsuma, both of which are part of the list, ‘Hyakumeizan’ (100 Famous Japanese Mountains). Locals and tourists alike can admire the lush nature during summer. Visit the legendary Amano-Iwato gods and the guardian god of Togakushi, enshrined at the Togakushi Shrine. Marvel at the commanding sight of 400-year-old Japanese cedar trees welcoming you to the shrine. Home to various legends, ninjas, and Shugendo, you can discover history, nature, and culture here. Together with Mt. Iizuna, Mt. Togakushi has been a place of mountain worship since ancient times. Mt. Iizuna is recommended for beginner mountaineers while Mt. Togakushi is best suited for experts. Lake Nojiri is famed for its placid waters and fossil remains of the Naumann Elephant. This volcanic lake is a destination for fishing and water sports.
