Lantau Island is often referred to as the “Lungs of Hong Kong,” because it is so green and undeveloped. On this full-day private walking tour, your own personal tour guide will take you around the awe-inspiring Tian Tan Buddha (Big Buddha), the wonderfully quaint stilt village of Tai O, and much more. Your tour begins with either a hotel pickup, or meeting your guide at Tung Chung MTR Station on Lantau Island. You’ll begin your exploration of Lantau with a ride on the Ngong Ping Cable Car, featuring views of Lantau Country Park over the course of a 25-minute ride. Once you arrive at the Big Buddha, you can climb the 268 steps to visit the top, the hall of the 10,000 Buddhas, and the Po Lin Monastery. Hop on the bus and ride next to Tai O, a fishing village of stilt houses built right on the water. Visit the colorful seafood market here, and learn why the village is famous for its production of shrimp sauce and shrimp paste. We’ll also stop by the restored Old Police Station, a historic building that has been reborn as the Tai O Heritage Hotel — a perfect place for lunch if you wish (at your own expense). Still at Tai O, we’ll next visit one of the last remaining shrimp sauce factories here, and a temple built in the 15th century, before boarding a speedboat for a 20-minute ride — keep an eye out for the native pink dolphins. If you wish, we can hike to a lookout point and see the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge. After seeing the best sights of Tai O, it’s time to jump on another bus, and head back to Tung Chung MTR station where the tour concludes.
