Discover the wonders of central Hokkaido in a single day on this convenient bus tour from Sapporo. On this tour, you'll visit Asahiyama Zoo in Asahikawa, and Shirogane Blue Pond and Shirahige Falls in Biei. Asahiyama Zoo is Japan's northermost zoo, and one of its most popular. Its location means that it's well-suited to housing polar animals like penguins and polar bears. Guests taking part in the tour between December and February will be able to watch the penguin walk — a special show only held in winter. As well as exotic animals, the zoo is host to a number of animals native to Hokkaido, like deer and wolves. After lunch, you'll head out to Biei, a town surrounded by rolling hills. Snowy in winter and covered with flowers in spring, Biei is a setting for many classic Japanese commercials. It's also the setting for two of Hokkaido's most striking natural features. The aptly-named Blue Pond near Shirogane Onsen is known for its deep, electric blue color. Depending on the season and weather conditions, its appearance varies, but you can expect a breathtaking view whenever you visit. Nearby, the Shirahige (literally 'White Moustache') Falls are so-called because of its distinctive shape. Three types of water — hot spring, cold spring and acidic — flow together and fall into a bright blue river. Especially for winter, you can see both the Blue Pond and Shirahige Falls illuminated at night for an even more powerful view. Depending on the season, you'll make other stops on the tour: February departures will visit The Sun Kurodo, a famous sweet and cake shop in Asahikawa. March departures will visit The Sun Kurodo and Otokoyama Sake Brewery Museum to learn about the history and culture behind Japan's national drink.
