Description

With a multilingual guide who can speak English and Japanese in addition to Mandarin Chinese, tour Taiwan's Northeast Coast and Jiufen Village — and learn about the history of mining in Taiwan in the process! This tour starts at 13:00, and departs from Taipei City. You will meet your guide and driver at MRT Zhongxiao Xinsheng Station (BL14/O07) Exit 2, then head northeast. Before visiting Jiufen, you will stop by Nanya, which is known for its unique rock formations along the coastline. These rocks got their peculiar shape and texture due to erosion by seawater. Then, you'll drive past the Bay of Two Colors, so named because the waters here are split into two colors: yellow and blue. In Chinese, it's called the "Yin-Yang Sea” because the contrasting colors call to mind the yin-yang symbol. The next stop is the remains of the 13 Levels, a former copper and gold refining plant in Jinguashi. Established in the 1940s, this smelting plant was shut down in the 1980s due to the exhaustion of ore. From far away, this building looks like an abandoned palace. Today, it's a popular filming location for music videos and TV commercials. Finally, you'll visit this tour's star attraction: Jiufen Village, a hillside town that flourished in the 1940s thanks to gold mining. But even though Taiwan's golden age of mining is long gone, Jiufen still has lots of stories to tell! The movie “A City of Sadness” by award-winning director Hou Hsiao-hsien raised the profile of Jiufen throughout Taiwan. Then, Jiufen's claim to fame as one of the rumored inspirations for the hit animated film "Spirited Away" made the town popular among international tourists as well. Today, Jiufen is the most popular tourist attraction in northern Taiwan. Lined with teahouses, shops, and food stalls peddling mouthwatering delicacies, it's definitely worth a visit when in Taiwan. Enjoy some high-quality local tea in a teahouse with a view, or stroll along the old street to sample food and shop for souvenirs. If you have a sweet tooth, don’t miss the opportunity to try the area's famous taro balls! After visiting Jiufen, you will be dropped off at Xinyi Shopping District (Taipei 101) or MRT Zhongxiao Xinsheng Station, marking the end of the tour.
