Overview
Kintsugi repair is a Japanese art form in which breaks and repairs are treated as part of the object's history. In this golden joinery workshop, broken ceramics are carefully mended with a Japanese Urushi lacquer mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum.

We cannot match a solo student with another group.** Coronavirus: Safety in Workshop Our number one priority is always the health and safety of our students. We want you to know that we are closely monitoring and adhere to guidance from the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare such as spaced-out seating and ventilation. Additionally, wearing face masks and rubber gloves are mandatory for all participants as of March 2020. Once you learn the art of kintsugi (golden joinery with Japanese urushi lacquer), you will be able to repair your own broken pottery and porcelain in your own home! Our English-speaking instructor will teach you the traditional Japanese method while you repair your own item in our studio, on a golden joinery workshop. We provide all of the materials. Traditionally, the number of lessons required for completion of the repair process is a minimum of 4 lessons over a month. However, this workshop is only part 1 of 4, so we will explain to you how to continue the repair process at home. Urushi-related-supplies are available for sale at our store. The workshop usually lasts 90 to 120 minutes. If you have your own broken ceramics, please contact us first, as some materials are unsuitable for kintsugi. Make sure that your item is small too, for you'll need to travel with it during the entire trip. Alternatively, we will prepare a broken plate for you. We would like to forewarn you that Urushi lacquer contains a compound that can cause a reaction similar to that of poison ivy. However, proper handling (gloves and a long-sleeve shirt), as well as working in a well-ventilated area will generally prevent an allergic reaction. As a precaution, hypo-allergenic urushi is used in our studio.
